During the hotel’s marquee restoration, ArtCare Conservation was entrusted with the careful revival of the 16 wall murals by Edward Emerson Simmons in the Silver Corridor — a significant heritage feature of the landmark property. Salvaged from the original Fifth Avenue hotel and relocated to the current Park Avenue site in 1931, these late-19th-century allegorical paintings depict the months of the year and carry substantial historical and artistic value. The ArtCare team applied rigorous conservation techniques — including thorough cleaning of accumulated grime and over-painting, stabilisation of the supports and restoration of original colour tones — to bring the murals back to life, ensuring they now harmonise with the restored silver-toned interior while preserving the artist’s intent and the work’s integrity.
By delivering museum-grade conservation within a luxury hospitality context, ArtCare helped safeguard a key piece of cultural heritage within one of New York’s most iconic hotels, enabling the Waldorf Astoria’s storied past to remain vivid and authentic for future generations.
