Job description

ArtCare Conservation is seeking to hire a full-time Assistant Painting Conservator for its Los Angeles studio. At our three locations in Miami, Los Angeles and New York, ArtCare team members work in a dynamic, collaborative setting on a wide range of painting supports and media, ranging from Old Master to modern and contemporary paintings and murals. Founded in 1982, the studio reflects the diverse backgrounds of its staff, while keeping up with the latest innovations and philosophies of the profession. Our clients include private collections, museums, galleries, city institutions as well as the general public.

The ideal candidate will have 2-5 years of post-graduate experience and demonstrable skill in the hands-on treatment of complex painted surfaces, including cleaning, consolidation, tear repair, inpainting and structural treatment of paintings on canvas; be able to work in an organized and efficient manner to complete projects and manage priorities; and have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral. They will demonstrate initiative, excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Experience with working on contemporary art and ability to work on site and on scaffolds for extended periods of time are preferred. The individual will work in conjunction with the head Paintings Conservator in LA as well as communicate with ArtCare NYC and Miami studio locations.

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in conservation from a recognized graduate conservation training program or equivalent. The candidate must be eligible to work in the United States without requiring a visa.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in planning and coordinating treatment workflows and priorities.
  • Performs routine inspection and maintenance of private collections.
  • Performs in-studio and on-site condition assessments and completes written condition reports and proposals.
  • Makes recommendations to clients on appropriate display, storage, and handling of paintings.
  • Develops treatment protocols and carries out treatment according to the standards set forth by the American Institute for Conservation (AIC).
  • Supervises conservation technician.
  • Assists in the maintenance of the studio, including sourcing material supplies, maintaining project records, and monitoring of conservation equipment.
  • Excellent computer skills, including proficiency in photo editing using Adobe Photoshop.
