Accidents happen. This beautiful landscape of the Chicago River by Alson Skinner Clark experienced an event that left a large tear with associated paint loss, and the canvas to release completely from its tacking margins, causing extreme planar distortions. After structural and pictorial treatment, this beauty hanging back where it belongs.

A native of Chicago, Alson Skinner Clark as a youth attended classes at the Art Institute of Chicago. He soon left Chicago for New York to study at the Art Students League and with William Merritt Chase. In 1898 he travelled to Europe for two years, studying under James McNeill Whistler in Paris. Clark was still painting until the day before his death, at age seventy-three.

It’s such an honor to have preserved this incredible ceiling mural at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. If you live in South Florida visit the museum to see this work, painted by Paul Thevanaz around 1920, and inspired by the Italian Rococo artist Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, After cleaning, consolidating, varnish removal, overpaint removal, and returning the composition to its artist’s original intention, this work is back up on the ceiling!

It’s been a year of work conserving the Casino p

It’s been a year of work conserving the Casino panel paintings at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. This work is comprised of nine border panels acquired as “tiepolesque”, while the three center panels were commissioned to Paul Thévenaz for Vizcaya. His design depicts musicians and courtiers looking over a balustrade against a blue sky with floating cherubs. The composition is strikingly similar to Tiepolo’s frescoes for Villa Contarini in Venice (now Musée Jaquemart-André, Paris), suggesting Chalfin may have known of this fresco and taken inspiration from the eighteenth-century master for Vizcaya’s creation.
